# Brake Inspection for Bikes

By StepList

Perform a thorough inspection of your bike's brakes, checking for wear, cable issues, and proper adjustment to ensure safe and effective braking.

- [ ] Visually inspect the brake pads for wear and ensure they are making full contact with the rim or disc.
- [ ] Check the brake cable for any fraying, kinks, or obstructions that may impede brake function.
- [ ] Squeeze the brake lever and ensure the pads are making firm, even contact with the rim or disc.
- [ ] Spin the wheels and observe the brake pads as they contact the rim or disc. Check for any rubbing or uneven braking.
- [ ] If the pads are worn down, replace them with new pads of the proper size and type.
- [ ] Adjust the brake cable tension to ensure the pads are engaging properly and the lever has the appropriate amount of travel.
- [ ] Test the brakes in a safe, open area to ensure they are functioning correctly and providing adequate stopping power.
